Prologue

Let me introduce myself. I am Larry Cole. I played football for the Dallas Cowboys for 13 years and I think a lot of people would be interested in my perspective of how I made my journey to become a player for America's Team and how it happened to an average guy with average talent, but a desire to succeed in whatever he attempted to achieve. "Excuse me. Who did you say you are? " I'm Larry Cole # 63 who played for the Dallas Cowboys from 1968 to 1981. Oh, well I never heard of you." I told him that I played one year with Don Meredith as quarterback, all of the Roger Staubach's eleven years and one year with Danny White. I played in five Super Bowls, winning two of them, eight Conference Championships winning five and when I retired I had the NFL record for most playoff games at 26. He said really? Who knew. Recently, I was talking to a subcontractor who told his young workers that I used to play for the Dallas Cowboys. They didn't believe it. They looked at me and I said yes that's true. They still were skeptical. My subcontractor then said to them. "Google it" They did and their faces lit up as only younger faces can do. Why are all the stories only about the great players? What about average guys who did their jobs, were good team players, and at times made big plays? Don't more people identify with those people? When I played, my fans were the average working class of people who worked their jobs, adjusted to failures and disappointments in their lives and moved on.

They weren't the flashy guys. They enjoyed the escape of watching pro football and identified with different players. Most had some less known player they like me to cheer for along with the stars. Today I am receiving 3 to 5 fan mail letters a week from all over the country, more than when I played. I think many people are very interested to know what things were like in those days. How we all had to prepare for work after football is over. I feel like I witnessed and participated in the most exciting period of the NFL and the Dallas Cowboys. We were the Team of the 70's. I was part of the Doomsday I and Doomsday II Defenses. I played 7 years with Bob Lilly and 6 year with Randy White. Both of these guys are in the Hall of Fame. I will share with you the inside stories of living the up and downs of pro football and my own development to be part of it. I am now fully retired from the residential development and construction industry. I am wondering what to do next. I have a lot more time for reflection and I marvel at my life and all I did with it. I was a shy timid sensitive young boy who grew up on a farm in rural Minnesota. I had white hair (not blond) and very light skin especially during the Minnesota winters. In this book, I will tell you the story of how being the youngest of four children growing up on the farm was like and what that taught me about how to work and compete. I will share with you my family's heritage. I will write about my development as a high school basketball and football player and my experience as an Air Force Academy Cadet and football player for 2 ½ years. Then my detour in the road of how I went from the University of Houston to the University of Hawaii and then drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 16th round out of 17 draft picks. Along the way I discovered something about myself that all the great ones like Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees, and so many more who are challenged by the single thought. " Tell me I can't do it and I will prove to you that I can" This isn't just reserved for the great ones. Average players can become good players and more if they are so motivated. I played in a unique era of pro football where the game replaced baseball as the national past time. I grew up watching Jim Brown, Johnny Unitas, Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Raymond Berry, Bart Starr and many more who carved out their contribution to the game. Joe Namath won the Super Bowl my rookie year which sealed the merger of the AFL and NFL. I witnessed the advent of Monday night football with Howard Cossell, Frank Gifford and Don Meredith. They would set the stage and open the game with the roar of the local crowd, proud of their City. Each City that hosted the game was highlighted adding to the friendly competition between the teams and their Cities and gave the television audience what it may be like to live in those places. I have witnessed the evolution of the game through the innovation of coaches from Paul Brown, George Halas, Vince Lombardi, Don Shula, Tom Landry, Bill Walsh to the current coaches. I witnessed the rise of the Super Bowl to effectively become a national holiday. I have written this book as if I am sitting down with you and having a conversation about first "What is it like to play in the NFL? Who were the best players and coaches? What people had the biggest impact on the game? Who were the best players I played against? What was it like playing in that era? How much were we paid and what happened to change all of that? The 70's were an exciting era in pro football and I was there for all of it. Are you interested in hearing my story and my opinion on what was happening in the NFL each step of the way. I was around for a lot of history and seem to be that other guy in the background that didn't get a lot of publicity nor did he want too much of it. Thus the Zero Club was formed. Find out what that's all about. I want this to be a different kind of book that will inform, entertain and put you in the moment as each year progressed. I will write this book for my version of the American dream and the impact the NFL had on my life. I will share with you my feelings at the time, my assessment of what was happening with the team and how all this happened while I was raising a family and running a business. I am giving you the inside story of how we climbed the mountain to win our first Championship and how we won our second Championship an how we fought to be in the hunt every year. I will share with you snippets of all the personalities that were there during my time. Go to Shop button to order book. Enjoy!
